That’s how Nick Price describes technology that is enabling decentralized and self-sovereign identity, commonly referred to as DID and
SSI.
As chair of the
Hospitality and
Travel Special Interest Group
within the Decentralized Identity Foundation,
Price is one of the leading voices on how DID and SSI will impact all sectors
of travel.

, Price explains how this technology –
and the trusted, permissioned, secure communication it enables - will change the way suppliers and travelers
interact and eliminate impediments that exist today.
“If
you are a travel provider, the one thing you want to know is who is my customer.
Who is about to walk through my door, if you’re a hotel. Who is about to step on
my plane if you’re an airline. Increasingly you don’t know... because there is this black box
in the middle, which is an intermediary. And the intermediaries over the last
20 years, I think we could all agree, have grown more powerful,” he says.
“[This has] obscured the arriving customer for the travel
provider, but the flip side also is true. If you are a traveler and you want something
specific in your travel experience, how do you communicate it? ... How
do you say once and that information is carried to where you need it to go
across travel providers rather than having to communicate to each and every
single one?”
Along with sharing details about DID/SSI uses cases in
development, Price explains what those working in travel today can do to
prepare for what he expects to be “rapid take up” of this technology by the end
of this decade.
