Unyoked
has landed €18 million to expand its offering of solar-powered cabins across Europe and the United Kingdom. Germany’s Surplus Equity Partners (SEP) and Australia’s Realside Financial Group led the funding round.
Founded in 2016, Unyoked operates approximately 100 off-grid cabins in Australia, New Zealand and the U.K. and has hosted about 35,000 overnight stays, according to the company.

“Spending time outdoors is an important balance to our lives in an increasingly noisy and hectic environment. Many of us still don’t understand just how powerful it can be,” says Unyoked co-founder Chris Grant.
“The current round of funding is an important step in our journey to help change that and make it easier for people to access the many benefits of nature more often.”
Unyoked says it handpicks remote locations that are within two hours of large cities. Settings include “rolling countryside, ancient woodlands and vast landscapes with breathtaking views,” according to the company, which counts American actor Matthew McConaughey as a collaborator.
Sebastian A. Lüdke, CEO of SEP, says his company is betting on a bright future for regional, sustainable travel in the post-COVID era. Lüdke sees an opportunity for partnerships between Unyoked and companies that want to offer their employees “recreational stays in nature to boost creativity and productivity.”
Unyoked cabins measure around 10 feet by 30 feet and are equipped with a kitchen with a gas stove, bathroom with a hot shower and outdoor fire pit, according to the company. The cabins use only solar power, making them independent from the electrical grid, and have their own rainwater tank, wood fire and composting toilets. Cabins come stocked with towels, blankets and cooking equipment.
